Culture Spot 01: On this day...September 15


On this day in 1981, the United States Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved President Reagan's nomination of Sandra Day O'Connor to the United States Supreme Court. She became the first woman to serve on the nation's highest court. She served as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court until she decided to retire from the bench in 2005.

On this day in 1890, one of the world's greatest mystery writers and playwrights was born - Agatha Christie. Known as the 'Queen of Crime,' she wrote 80 detective novels and numerous successful plays, one of which is the longest running in history - The Mousetrap. It has been played continuously since 1952. Most of her crime novels feature either the great Belgian detective Hercule Poirot or Miss Jane Marple, an elderly spinster and amateur detective.
