This funny television commercial by Geico is adapted from an old tongue twister: ‘How much could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.’ Now say that 10 times real fast! A woodchuck is another name for a groundhog which in French translates to une marmotte.
As you can probably deduce from the video, to chuck is an informal verb meaning ‘to throw.’ It also has the meaning of throwing something away you no longer want. In British English, if you chuck someone such as a boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse (un époux, une épouse) , you end the relationship.
