Culture Spot: President William Henry Harrison’s Birthday

533px-William_Henry_Harrison_daguerreotype Today is the birthday of the ninth President of the United States. Harrison was the first president to die in office, only 32 days after taking office due to a cold that turned into pneumonia and pleurisy!

His presidency was the shortest but he gave the longest inaugural address in US history, 2 hours long on a cold and wet March day! Until Reagan became president, Harrison also had the distinct honor of being the oldest elected president.

The untimely death of Harrison caused a brief constitutional crisis on what the US Constitution intended for presidential succession. Upon his death, Vice President John Tyler assumed the presidency. To learn more, read the article at Wikipedia for more information.
