Today in the United States is known as Black Friday. The day following Thanksgiving is called this because it is the official beginning of the Christmas season and when retail stores start to make a profit. The expression to be in the black means you have a profit. The opposite is to be in the red.
Most employees take the day off in order to have a long weekend thus increasing the number of potential customers to retail stores. Most stores open very early on this day to take advantage of the numbers of customers and to lengthen the time for making money. Some stores will open as early as 5am or earlier!
