the Pledge (The Pledge of Allegiance)	a short speech that U.S. citizens recite (=learn and say), in which they formally promise to be loyal to their country. Children say this every morning in most schools. When reciting the Pledge, you put your right hand over your heart, and look at the flag. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
