Cartoon by Henry Payne of The Detroit News (Michigan) published on 29 September 2009.
The money tree, an imaginary tree referenced in the saying "money doesn't grow on trees!" The origin of this saying may be the story Pinocchio. It may appear in works of fiction as a tree whose leaves resemble banknotes and whose fruits resemble coins. The use of the tree's leaves and fruits as forms of payment in fiction usually brings eventual trouble, such as the leaves drying up, and the characters end up learning the lesson that money must be earned with the sweat of the brow.
