Slang and Idioms 03: Pockets

Let's look at some cool expressions that use the term 'pocket.'

If you want to say someone is wealthy, you'd say that he has deep pockets. Bill Gates spends a lot of money and gives a lot of him money to charities. He has deep pockets. Unfortunately some people have money but don't pay for anything. They have deep pockets but short arms. If you are the kind of person that can't keep money in your pocket because you'll spend it if you have it, we'd say that money burns a hole in your pocket.

Another common expression using 'pocket' is used when we want to say that we had to pay for all the expenses. For example, if I had to pay for a medical service that isn't covered by health insurance, I'd say, "I had to pay for that bill out of my own pocket." This would be called an out-of-pocket expense.
