I like this word and my mother used it at times. This word of course comes from the word sober which has sober is the opposite of drunk. Secondly, it describes someone with a serious attitude and lastly, it means plain and not brightly colored. Sobersides comes from the second meaning – serious. A sobersides (both singular and plural) is someone who is serious and humorless. I would describe it as someone who never really cracks a smile. The “sides” probably refers to the sides of the face. The adjective for this word is sobersided. Many dictionaries simply give the definition for sobersides as a sobersided person. The word’s origins date back to the beginning of the 18th century.
